actKM Discussion List Netiquette

Community rules

21 April 2006

Our aim in actKM is to provide forums for information exchange, discussion and debate. We have created these Community Rules (the actKM Netiquette) to foster an environment of shared values, mutual respect, honesty and trust.

These rules apply to user contributions to the discussion forum, articles and documents uploaded to the site and comments added to existing articles published within the site, in short all interaction with actKM. actKM reserves the right for its moderators to remove any postings which do not adhere to its Netiquette, or take further action if required (see below).

1.    Respect the netiquette:
  • Lurk and get to know the forum before you post.
2.    Be concise:
  • Short, well-structured concise posts are harder to write, but easier to absorb.
  • Don't post just to increase your number of posts. If you have nothing to say on a certain matter then don't post. The number of posts on this forum has no direct relation to the knowledge or experience of a member.
  • To ensure your posts are concise and to maximise their value, please snip any superfluous content from posts that you are replying to.
3.    Keep the focus:
  • Keep the content of discussions on the topic of Knowledge Management and related issues.
  • Postings outside the scope of the forum may not be cleared by the moderators for posting.
  • Discussions without a clear link to knowledge management issues, eg politics, are not welcome, neither are discussions on religion and other matters that may be offensive.
  • Use a title that describes the content of your post. Don't use all caps or special characters to draw attention.
4.    Be responsible:
  • You are responsible for any content you post. Where it relates to an existing discussion topic or article, ensure that it is relevant and will prove useful to other members taking part.
  • As a poster and participant, you are responsible for copyright and trademark infringements in your messages. Please do not post material in your messages unless you yourself have the legal right to do so, or have received permission from the author or owner.
  • Instructions by the moderators are to be followed.
5.    Show respect:
  • Please be polite and respectful towards other members of the community, and remember that others may not always share your point of view. Disruptive, offensive, defamatory or abusive behaviour will not be tolerated. Remember: a debating style that may seem acceptable to you, may be intimidating or insulting to others.
  • Please consider other users at all times when using actKM’s interactive spaces. Behaviour that deters other members from engaging with the community is not welcome. Allow other members to contribute and do not dominate any discussions. This is identified by repeatedly answering your own articles or comments, or being recognised as always the last person to comment. Complaints about members showing this behaviour will be taken seriously.
  • Be nice to each other and respect the moderator. Profanity and insults will not be tolerated. If you have a problem with another member, take it off-line or turn to the moderator.
  • The official language is English, but please remember that many members are not native English speakers; keep you language simple and clear for this sake.
  • Links to content of a questionable nature, asking for, or offering such content in any way or form is not tolerated.
6.    Don’t spam:
  • Please do not use actKM for self-promotion. This can take the form of advertisements for your professional services, products etc. or repeated promotion of other websites/blogs/forums etc. We welcome collaboration with other forums but not a series of links to them without direct relevance to the discussion (e.g. repeated linking from comments). If you have a reasonable cause for promotion or would like to be sponsored in some form, please contact the actKM Moderator.
  • Whilst some advertising is allowed when in the form of an information service to members, blatant advertising is not welcome.
7.    Be honest:
  • Anonymous registrations and pseudonyms that conceal your identity are not welcome.
  • Multiple identities per member are not welcome.  If you need to have multiple registrations, please ensure that they point to a single valid identity.

In the unfortunate event of any member abusing the community in any of the ways above, the actKM Moderator reserves the right to remove or edit postings. The author (of the article to which the comments are made) and commenter will be notified by the actKM Moderator. If members continue to behave in an unsuitable manner, they are liable to being barred from the community for a period determined by the actKM Convenor. Should they return after this barring and continue to behave in ways not in keeping with the actKM Netiquette, they will be permanently banned from actKM.

How NOT to post on this forum:
  • Five minutes after your initial post you reply to your own post writing something like ‘Why is nobody helping me? I'm sure you know the answer’.
  • When somebody replies to your thread but doesn't give you exactly the answer you've been expecting, you insult them.
  • Posting just to increase your number of posts.
  • Posting anonymously or using a pseudonyms that conceals your identity.
